Andrew Kushnir is an experienced jazz drummer and music teacher. He currently lives in New York City, where he hosts the Sunday Jazz Jam at Shrine World Music Venue, in Harlem. Andrew also performs regularly with his trio in venues around the area, including at Smalls, Bar Next Door, Silvana, City Winery, Mezzrow Jazz Club, Minton’s, Pete’s Candy Store, PIANOS, Rockwood Music Hall, Tomi Jazz, and more.
Andrew holds a degree in Performance from Berklee College of Music, in Boston, as well as a master’s degree in Jazz Studies from New York University. At Berklee, he ran and rehearsed ensembles at the Berklee Bass Week workshops, with Ron Mahdi, and assisted visiting artist Victor Wooten. Andrew also worked alongside drum professor Neal Smith to rehearse and lead all-star jazz ensembles. These experiences cemented Andrew’s love of teaching and collaboration. They made him realize that the study of music is best done in a mentorship environment. He enjoys working one-on-one with his students and individualizing lessons to their particular interests and needs.
Andrew has had the pleasure of performing alongside musicians such as Carlos Abadie, Stacy Dillard, Chet Doxas, John Ellis, Josh Evans, Alan Ferber, David Hazeltine, Joe Magnarelli, Rich Perry, Dave Pietro, Rick Rosato, Brad Shepik, Dayna Stephens, JC Stylles, and Spike Wilner. Now, he enjoys sharing his love of music and the drums with his students.
Andrew first came to the drums at age 17. He began his formal studies with drummers Jim Doxas and Michel Berthiume, and was soon on the Montreal jazz scene playing gigs and frequenting jam sessions. Prior to finding the drums, Andrew sampled, produced, and DJed in the Grammy-nominated jazz/hip-hop band Morph-tet, led by Franco Proietti. Prior to that, he was lucky enough to grow up in a musical household, falling in love with jazz via his guitar-enthusiast father’s extensive record collection.
